The exact location of the camp is not indicated on the Catoctin Mountain Park map due to security and privacy concerns given its nature as a holiday retreat for the President and his family as well as a site for historical moments from the signing of the Camp David Accords in September, 1978 between Egypt and Israel to Barack Obama choosing to host the 38th G8 summit in 2012. Over the years, Presidents have chosen to use Camp David to host World leaders.

Military personnel primarily staffed the base because it is technically a military installation. It boasts a 250-yard golf course, a natural trail suitable for horse riding, a swimming pool, and numerous other recreational activities. There are no on-base schools; thus, students will have to be served by the public school system of Frederick County. Its school system comprises 63 schools divided into 36 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, 9 high schools, special education, alternative education, and career/technology facilities.

On-base housing is managed privately but offers many amenities like parks, athletic centres and playgrounds. You can find off-base housing in 5 different cities, which are all a few miles away from the base. They include Clover Hill Virginia, Mt. Airy, Maryland, Frederick Maryland, Middletown Maryland, and Ballenger Creek Maryland.
