Like most bases in the US, Camp Bowie has a long history of providing defense and training for soldiers. Named after James Bowie, a leading figure in the Texas Revolution who died at the Alamo, Camp Bowie was originally built in 1917 in the location that is now Arlington Heights, just outside of Fort Worth, Texas. Established to provide training for the 36th infantry division. The original Camp Bowie was closed in 1919.
In 1940, Camp Bowie was relocated to Fort Worth and reopened due to growing hostilities in Europe and grew to become the largest training center located in Texas. Many changes have been made over the years to camp Bowie and unfortunately, not much of the original and historic base is left, having been turned into a large medical center, including a large hospital. One of the most recent changes was in a major renovation following a grass fire in 2008 where parts of the based were damaged. Camp Bowie continues today as an active training center for the Texas National Guard and other units of Texas Military Forces.
Brownwood, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Brownwood County. Brownwood, very close to Camp Bowie, has close ties with the base and is where many military families call home. There are many wonderful sites for Brownwood visitors and residents that include the Forest Park Miniature Railroad, Kimball Art Museum, Fort Worth Zoo, National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, SeaQuest Fort Worth, and many others.
For trainees who are at Camp Bowie for a short time, on-site housing is provided. For those stationed or employed at the facility, however, housing must be located off-post. Brownwood and Fort Worth offer quite a few neighborhoods that are close to the base and family friendly, and include Western Hills-Ridglea Hills, Arlington Heights, Downtown, TCU-Westcliff, and Wedgewood.
