Barksdale Air Force Base is located in Bossier City, in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. Bossier City is separated from the city of Shreveport by the Red River. Shreveport is the 3rd largest city in Louisiana in terms of population and combined with Bossier City it has a population of almost 400,000 people. Barksdale AFB is approximately 8 miles away from downtown Shreveport. Founded in 1932, the base is now home to the 2nd Bomb Wing, the oldest and largest bomb wing of the US Air Force. 2nd Bomb Wing is also one of the two bomb wings (the other being the 5th Bomb Wing) that have the capability to operate the B-52 Stratofortress.

There are no DoD schools on base, and there aren’t any public schools on base either. Children of service members are served by either Bossier Parish or Caddo Parish School Districts, depending on where they live. The nearest elementary school is Bellaire Elementary, which is located right outside the base.
